A Digital hub for our Natural Desert World

A dynamic digital hub for learning how to coexist with the vibrant desert ecosystem and its wildlife. Our engaging platform offers an interactive curriculum. The DEC offers downloadable worksheets and videos; while also offering immersive in-person workshops. These resources are tailored for K-12 students and adult learners alike.

Our curriculum draws from Dr. Cecil R. Schwalbe’s lifetime of work and love for the natural desert in the Southwestern United States. Dr. Schwalbe, who served as Arizona’s first state herpetologist, spent his career researching the desert and its inhabitants. Click to learn more about Dr. Schwalbe below.

The purpose of the Desert Ecology Classroom is to give a free resource of scientifically vetted information. The Desert Ecology Classroom will offer downloadable content for K-12 teachers, students, and the general public.

Our educational content draws from the lifelong work of the late Dr. Cecil Schwalbe, Arizona’s first state herpetologist. Dr. Schwalbe wrote a manuscript for a book on coexisting with desert creatures as human populations continue to grow. Unfortunately, Dr. Schwalbe passed away in 2022, before he could publish his book. It is in his honor that the Desert Ecology Classroom will carry on with his important mission. Dr. Schwalbe’s manuscripts and notes will serve as the beating heart of our learning hub.
